America's
Concerns

Close Indian Point

The Indian Point Nuclear Reactor is within a 50-mile radius of 8 percent of the population of the U.S.A. That includes ALL of New York City, ALL of Bergen County NJ, ALL of Putnam County NY, ALL of Rockland County NY, ALL of Westchester County NY and most of Fairfield County CT.

All nuclear power plants must now be considered potential terrorist targets. That's especially true of Indian Point, which has two nuclear power plants and a fuel storage site, all within 50 miles of more than 20 million people.

MORE PEOPLE ARE AT RISK FROM CONTAMINATION FROM INDIAN POINT THAN FROM ANY OTHER NUCLEAR SITE IN THE NATION.

Remarkably, Indian Point also enjoys the very singular distinction of being at the very top of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's list of the "most trouble-plagued nuclear plants in the nation." In light of these facts, the county's evacuation plan, largely ignored in the past, is now a crucial issue.

A meltdown of the nuclear fuel and a fire at either of the reactors or the spent fuel pools would disperse lethal radioactive clouds throughout a fifty-mile radius. This radiation would shift according to the way the wind blows. Don Mauer of the New York State Emergency Management Office reminds us that "our evacuation plans are for a ten mile zone. There are no detailed plans for miles 10-50."

Editor's note: Wouldn't it be likely that the US government would attack Indian Point, but then blame the Arabs to enable Patriot Act 2 to be legislated and signed into law? They did this on 9/11, so could do it again. The USA PATRIOT Act was written up months before 9/11 occurred.
